Following the road west to this German styled winery in the hills, will be rewarded with friendly staff and good value wines.
The Winery is named after Walter Schug who moved to Napa decades ago and started his wine making career at Joseph Phelps in the 1970s. He specializes in Pinot Noir, but also produces other varietals (Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon).
The tasting room is small, but the staff are friendly and welcoming. David the canny Scotsman is very hospitable and always willing to look in back for library wines, or give people a quick tour round the winery and cellar. If you order enough wine, David will even give you the club discount prices.
Visited multiple times in small and large groups, enjoyed the wines and cheese selections many times. |

| 1996 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon ($120) | Rating: C-D Nov 23rd, 2006 |
| Tasted twice at Thanksgiving dinner in past two years and doesn't disappoint. Great earthy aromas and mouth filling taste with a medium long finish. Even as a magnum, the bottle does not last long. |
| 1999 Reserve Merlot ($30) | Rating: C May 27th, 2005 |
| Smooth and long full flavour, excellent wine |
| 2001 Reserve Pinot Noir ($25) | Rating: C Apr 3rd, 2006 |
Best Value Wine - April, 2006
Well structured Pinot, nicely balanced and a clean long finish. A great wine to start the evening before eating. |
| 1995 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon ($60) | Rating: B-C Dec 29th, 2006 |
| Very balanced cab, drinking well although limited tannins, but may be near its end. |
| 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon ($18) | Rating: B-C Jan 27th, 2008 |
| Smells a little musty on the nose, with some fruit remaining. Good structure with a back of mouth finish, should last another couple of years. |
| 2002 Reserve Pinot Noir ($30) | Rating: B-C Apr 3rd, 2006 |
| Fruitier tasting than the 2001, but still very balanced and drinkable. Light berry taste and good finish. |

| Classic Pinot herbal aroma and earthy flavours with medium slightly smoky finish. |
| 2005 Reserve Pinot Noir ($35) | Rating: B Dec 22nd, 2007 |
| Solid pinot with good pinot smell and a good drinker for midweek, but not as powerful or long finish like earlier years for this wine. |
| 2006 Carneros Pinot Noir ($26) | Rating: B Aug 24th, 2008 |
| Better balance than the Sonoma Coast Pinot, strawberry and cherry on the palate. |
| 2006 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir ($24) | Rating: A-B Aug 24th, 2008 |
| Tight with raspberry flavours. |
