Live band, really great food from oysters to tacos to lamb chops, and of course endless amounts of wine. This is our second year going to the Open House and we really do recommend attending. Feb 4th 2006: Keenan focuses on three varietals - Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and produces nearly 10000 cases per year. Their wines have been receiving a lot of attention from wine critics lately, so we had to call by to see what all the fuss is about. The winery itself is located in a beautiful area off Spring Mountain Road where they have 50 acres under vine. The tasting room is large and can cater to a big crowd, although very dark. I am amazed there were no windows looking out over the vineyards. We were not overly impressed by the service but we put that down to it being late in the day, there were a lot of people there and only one person working. We enjoyed the wines, particularly the 2002 Cabernet and would like to call in to the winery again, but earlier in the day. |

| 2001 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($30) | Rating: C Sep 30th, 2005 |
Best Wine - September, 2005
Tasty - needs to be saved for a few years. 07/30/09 - Just opened up the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon and it is a very nice wine. Definitely needed a few years in the bottle and I am just annoyed I did not buy more at the time. Still got good fruit and long finish. Could go a few more years. Beautiful nose and deep garnet color |
| 2004 Reserve Merlot ($60) | Rating: C Aug 19th, 2007 |
| Huge Merlot - 300 cases |
| 2002 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($40) | Rating: B-C Feb 4th, 2006 |
| A very nice Cab with lots of fruit and a great finish with lots of tannins. This wine needs time. It should be very good in a few years. Robert Parker gave it 92 points if that means anything |
| 2005 Reserve Merlot ($60) | Rating: B-C Aug 24th, 2008 |
| Chewier than the regular Merlot, although tannins are not balanced yet. |
| 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve ($96) | Rating: B-C Jun 21st, 2010 |
| The prices of some of the Keenan wines have really gone crazy, especially in these tough economic times. The 2006 Reserve Cabernet is another example of a very expensive Cabernet. It is a nice wine, dark ruby red, good tannins but definitely not worth $96 |
| 2006 Side by Side, Spring Mountain ($116) | Rating: B-C Jun 21st, 2010 |
| 50% Cab Franc, 50% Merlot. Long tannins. Definitely not a $116 wine - you would be crazy to spend this amount on it as there are way better wines for a lot cheaper |
| 2002 Carneros Merlot ($25) | Rating: B Feb 4th, 2006 |
| Won a "Best Merlot, Double Gold" at the SF International Wine Competition in 2005. I thought it was average. A nice mid-week wine |
| 2002 Napa Valley Merlot ($32) | Rating: B Sep 7th, 2008 |
Tannins have softened, but still overpowering the fruit, not bad, but not memorable
Feb 04, 2006: A-B We got a lot of comments on the smell of this wine: "Smells like cow manure", "A cow just backed up into my face" . Dave didn't like it. Shane enjoyed it.
This was our 7th winery visit in one day so we should try this wine again. |
| 2003 Napa Valley Merlot ($34) | Rating: B Feb 9th, 2007 |
| Sharp with top of mouth flavours. Very fruit forward, but the tannins are overpowering. |
| 2004 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($45) | Rating: B Aug 24th, 2008 |
| Lots of berries and tannins, short-medium finish. |
| 2005 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($45) | Rating: B Jun 21st, 2010 |
| Medium body Cabernet with smooth tannins. An average Cabernet - better value out there |
| 2005 Napa Valley Merlot ($36) | Rating: B Aug 24th, 2008 |
| Nice fruit, drinkable |
| 2006 Napa Valley Merlot ($36) | Rating: B Jun 21st, 2010 |
| I wasn't hugely impressed with the 2006 Merlot. Upfront good fruit but did not have a lot of structure |
| 2005 Cabernet Franc ($50) | Rating: A-B Aug 24th, 2008 |
| Short and no punch, disappointing at this price from this winery. |
| 2003 Napa Valley Zinfandel ($26) | Rating: A Feb 4th, 2006 |
